Mika Luff — Head Chandler & Fragrance Architect
Mika Luff is the person who makes every Scent Nation candle. Not a factory. Not a fulfilment warehouse. One person, in a studio in Port Stephens, NSW — pouring, labelling, and inspecting each candle before it goes out the door.
Her title is Head Chandler and Fragrance Architect, but what that really means is this: she is the one who decides which fragrance oils are good enough to go into a Scent Nation candle, which wax blends perform the way they should, and how a personalised label needs to be laid out so it looks exactly right when someone opens the box.
Candle making is not complicated. Making a candle that is worth keeping — that is the work.
Every personalised candle that arrives with someone's name, their date, their message — Mika has read that message before she made the candle. That's not a process. That's a standard she holds for herself because she understands what the moment means to the person receiving it.
The Studio
Port Stephens, NSW — Where Every Candle Begins
Scent Nation's studio is in Port Stephens, NSW — a place known for its coastline, its calm, and its community. It is not a factory suburb. It is not a distribution hub. It is the kind of place where things are made properly, slowly, and without shortcuts.
Every candle is hand-poured in small batches. The wax is 100% natural soy. The fragrance oils are phthalate-free and pet safe — because a home fragrance that harms the animals in that home is not something we are willing to make. The wicks are lead-free cotton. These are not marketing claims. They are the non-negotiable requirements of the studio.
The Process
How Your Candle Gets Made
Your order arrives
Every order is read before anything is made. For personalised candles — the name, the date, the message — Mika reads it first. This is not automatic. It is a deliberate step.
The wax is prepared
100% natural soy wax is weighed and melted to the exact temperature required for the fragrance to bind correctly. Too hot and the scent dissipates. Too cool and it doesn't blend. The temperature matters.
Fragrance is blended
Phthalate-free fragrance oils are measured and blended into the wax at the correct load percentage. Each scent has a different character — some are delicate, some are bold. The blend is adjusted accordingly.
Hand-poured into the jar
The wax is poured by hand — not by machine. The wick is centred and held in place while the wax sets. The candle is then left to cure for the time required to reach optimal scent throw.
Label designed & applied
For personalised candles, the label is designed with the name, date, message and any custom elements. Checked. Printed. Applied by hand. Each label is inspected before the candle is sealed.
Packed & dispatched
Wrapped in tissue, placed in a gift-ready box, sealed and dispatched. Personalised candles are ready within 1–3 business days. Ready-made candles ship next business day. Every order tracked from studio to door.
