Hi — I'm Mika. I hand-pour scented candles in our NSW home studio for Scent Nation Australia, and I've been at this since 2023. If you've landed on this page typing "scented candles australia" into Google, you're probably trying to do one of three things: find a candle you'll actually want to burn every night, buy a thoughtful gift for someone who already owns thirty candles, or quietly check that what you're lighting is safe around your dog. This guide answers all three.
Scented candles are home-fragrance candles made from a wax base (we use clean, pure soy), a cotton wick, and a fragrance load that releases when the wax pool melts. In Australia, hand-poured soy options like ours dominate the premium end because soy burns cleaner than paraffin, holds scent for 40–50 hours per jar, and — importantly for us — every one of our 198-and-counting candles is pet-safe and non-toxic when burned responsibly. (More by the time you're reading this, almost certainly — we keep adding.)
That last line is what I want to spend most of this page on. Because most of the other guides that come up when you Google this talk about "top scents" without ever mentioning what's actually in the wax or whether your cavoodle should be in the room. So let's do this properly.
"The honest version: a lot of supermarket scented candles use a paraffin or paraffin-soy blend. We make ours from pure soy — hand-poured, dispatched in 48 hours from the bench I'm sitting at right now."
— Mika, Scent Nation Australia
How I make our scented candles (the part the magazine listicles skip)
Every jar starts as a small batch on the kitchen-adjacent bench in our NSW home studio. The base is our non-toxic, clean, pure soy wax — plant-based, made for clean-burning, and I won't tell you the exact pour temperature because that's the part we've spent three years tuning and it's the only thing keeping our scent throw ahead of the bigger labels. (Trade secret, sorry — not being precious.)
What I will tell you:
- The wax: premium soy, sourced Australian where the supply allows, with no paraffin blend and no synthetic dye. Reading the SDS shouldn't require a chemistry degree.
- The fragrance load: triple-scented on the gourmands (Coffee Bean, Cinnamon Donut, Musk Sticks) so they actually fill the room. The florals run a touch lighter so they don't headache you out at midnight.
- The wick: lead-free cotton, sized to the diameter of each jar so the pool reaches the edge without tunnelling.
- The cure: every candle rests 1–2 weeks before it's safe to burn at full throw. If you order Friday and burn Saturday, you'll get maybe 60% of what's in the jar. I'll ask you to wait. It matters.
- Dispatch: 48 hours from order. Out of our home studio, not a warehouse. If you're in Sydney metro and Auspost behaves, that's usually a Tuesday order, Thursday on the doorstep.
Our pet-safe, non-toxic, pure soy promise is brand-wide — every candle in the range, from the first pour to the most recent. That's the floor we build everything else on, and it's the part I'm proudest of.
✦ The fourteen scent profiles, and what room each one suits ✦
Here's the part most articles skip. A lot of "best scented candles Australia" guides will name a scent and stop there. I'm going to tell you which room and which mood each one earns its keep in — based on three years of customer messages telling me where their candle ended up living.
| Scent profile | Family | Best room | The vibe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee Bean | Gourmand | Kitchen, home office | Smells like a Melbourne café at 7am. Triple-scented. |
| Coconut Lime | Fruity | Bathroom, sunroom | Beachy, clean, summer-coded. |
| Champagne & Strawberries | Fruity | Bedroom, dining room | Celebratory. The one for date nights and good Tuesdays. |
| Watermelon Sugar | Fruity | Living room, kid's bedroom | Bright, fresh, gets a lot of "this smells like a holiday" feedback. |
| Lemon Meringue | Gourmand citrus | Kitchen, laundry | Lifts a flat afternoon without trying. |
| Cinnamon Donut | Gourmand | Living room (winter) | Smells like a hot bakery on a wet Sunday. |

| Mozzie Guard | Functional citrus | Outdoor patio | Repels mozzies. Smells like a boutique, not a hardware store. |

A real customer message that's stayed in my head — from Anika in Mosman, NSW, last March: "Just lit the Coconut Lime in the kids' bathroom and the dachshund came in, sniffed it, and went back to sleep on the bath mat. That's the highest compliment a candle gets in this house." That review is the reason the dachshund crowd keeps coming back.
Looking for a dachshund gift in Australia? We have a candle for that. Our Dachshund Candle — amber and sandalwood with the sausage-dog energy your dachshund-owner friend already lives by. Free engraving on the Large lid if it's a "from-the-pup" gift.
Looking for a gift for an F1 fan? We have a candle for that. Our Racing Fuel Petrol Scented Candle smells like a pit lane — burnt rubber, hot tarmac, the moment before lights go out. The label reads "RACE FUEL — for the lounge room laps". Free engraving on the Large lid if you want their name on it.
What's the difference between soy and paraffin scented candles?
Soy scented candles are made from hydrogenated soybean oil — a plant-based, renewable wax that burns cleaner and cooler than paraffin. Paraffin is a petroleum by-product. Soy holds fragrance well, throws scent evenly through a 40–50 hour burn, produces less soot, and washes out of jars with warm soapy water. Paraffin throws a stronger initial scent but burns hotter, sootier, and faster.
Three practical differences that matter when you're actually buying:
- Burn time per dollar: a 285g (10oz) Large from us gives approximately 50 hours. Paraffin at the same jar weight tends to burn faster.
- Indoor air quality: cleaner soy smoke means less black residue on your ceiling above the candle. Anyone who's lived through a paraffin Christmas knows the look.
- Pet households: pure soy with a cleaner fragrance load is the safer pick when your dog or cat is in the room — paired with the safety rules in the next section.
Are scented candles safe for pets?
Yes — when made properly and burned responsibly. Somewhere around 198 candles in our range right now are pet-safe and non-toxic — and it'll be more by the time you find this. We have a candle for that. Actually, we have a candle for most things. The pet-safe scope is brand-wide, not a single line, and we've made it that way from day one. But "pet-safe wax and fragrance" doesn't mean "set and forget" — there are three rules I ask every customer to follow:
The three pet-safe burn rules — non-negotiable in our house:
- Proper ventilation. Crack a window or run the fan. A pet's nose is far more sensitive than ours — a scent throw that smells lovely to you can be overwhelming to them.
- Stable, heat-safe surface. Ceramic plate, stone, marble, the wooden side table — not directly on fabric, not near a curtain edge, not on the rim of a basin where a cat could swipe it.
- Away from curious paws — and never burn unattended around animals. If the dachshund is jumping at the bench or the cavoodle is mid-zoomies, the candle waits.
That's our floor. Beyond the wax and fragrance, the RSPCA's home-safety advice for pets is the authoritative AU read — they cover heat hazards, household products, and what to do if a paw gets too close.
The Pet Safe Scented Candles collection is also our most-visited candle page in Australia for pet-safe options — twenty-three of them, including odour-eliminator scents that double as the most polite litter-tray fix you'll ever buy.
Looking for a cat-safe candle that won't drive your feline out of the room? We have a candle for that. Our Cat Lovers Candle is a soft vanilla, brand-wide pet-safe, and Tomato-the-cat-tested. The kind of scent you can light at 6pm and your cat will still be on the couch at 7pm.
How long do soy scented candles last?
A 285g (10oz) Large soy scented candle from Scent Nation burns for approximately 50 hours. The 225g (8oz) Medium runs approximately 40 hours. That assumes you burn it the way wicks want to be burned: 2–3 hour sessions, never longer than 4. The first burn matters most — let the wax pool reach the jar edge before you snuff it, or you'll build a tunnel and waste half the candle. (Tunnelling is the #1 reason customers email me thinking their candle is faulty. It almost never is.)
Which scented candle is best for the bedroom?
For bedrooms, pick a lighter floral, a soft amber, or a clean fruity — the heavy gourmands are best in the kitchen or lounge. From our range, the three I keep recommending for bedrooms are:
- Champagne & Strawberries — celebratory but not overwhelming. The romantic pick.
- Santal (Le Labo-style) — sandalwood + cardamom + warm cedar. The "grown-up" bedroom.
- Musk Sticks — pure nostalgia. Gentle. Sleep-friendly.
Avoid Coffee Bean and Cinnamon Donut here — they're delicious in the kitchen, way too foody at 10pm.
Personalisation: engraving on the lid (the part most makers don't talk about)
When you Google "personalised gifts", engraving dominates — engraved decanters, engraved cutting boards, engraved cufflinks. We sit cleanly in that category, with a quirk worth knowing:
- Our scented candles range (the one this guide is about) ships in a premium black tube box as standard, with a pre-printed branded label on the jar — not personalisable on the label itself. Personalisation is via free engraving on the candle lid — included on every Large $46.99 size. You write what you want engraved at checkout; I engrave; it ships.
- Our personalised range (a separate product line — birthdays, anniversaries, pet memorials) uses a vinyl sticker wrap around the jar, where you upload a photo or name and we apply it.
If you want both — a specific scent profile and a gifted, named-recipient lid — Large size on any scented candle is the move. The engraving is included; you don't tick a box, you just type the name. Pair it with our Luxury Hermes-style gift bag at checkout for an upgrade that lands like you spent twice the money.
"The lid-engraving runs free on every Large. It's the cheapest upgrade we offer and it lifts a $46.99 candle to a gift that gets photographed."

Aussie summer Christmas + Christmas in July: pick the scent for the season
This is where Australia diverges from every Northern Hemisphere candle guide. December here is 32°C and the kids are at the beach. Cinnamon Donut in 32°C is wrong on purpose. So:
- Summer / December–February: Coconut Lime, Watermelon Sugar, Lemon Meringue, Mozzie Guard on the patio.
- Christmas in July: the cosy fakers' Christmas. Cinnamon Chai and Cinnamon Donut belong here, not December.
- Autumn / shoulder months: Coffee Bean, Santal, Musk Sticks.
Coconut Lime is one of our busiest scents heading into the Aussie Christmas. We have a candle for the summer-Christmas crowd — and a different one for the woollen-jumper, July-fireplace crowd.
✦ How to pick a scented candle (the 4-step shortcut) ✦
If you've read this far and just want the answer, here's the shortcut I send to friends:
- Pick the room first, scent second. Where the candle lives decides the family (kitchen → gourmand, bedroom → floral/amber, bathroom → fruity/clean).
- Read the wax line. "Soy" alone doesn't mean pure soy — look for "non-toxic, clean, pure soy wax" and a maker who'll tell you the wick is lead-free.
- Check pet-safety at the brand level, not the product level. Brand-wide pet-safe (like ours — 198-and-counting candles, system not slogan) means there's a process behind it; product-level means there isn't.
- Buy the Large if it's a gift. Engraving is included, the jar is bigger, and the unbox looks like a proper gift.
That's it. The rest is preference.
Frequently asked questions
Are scented candles safe for pets?
Yes — when the wax is non-toxic soy and the burn rules are followed. Every one of our 198-and-counting candles is brand-wide pet-safe and non-toxic. Pair that with proper ventilation, a stable heat-safe surface, and never burn unattended around animals. Keep candles away from curious paws.
How long do Scent Nation scented candles burn for?
The Large (285g) burns approximately 50 hours, the Medium (225g) approximately 40 hours. Burn in 2–4 hour sessions; let the first burn reach the jar edge to prevent tunnelling.
Can I personalise a scented candle?
Yes. The Large $46.99 size includes free engraving on the candle lid — type the name or message at checkout. The label itself is pre-printed branded; for vinyl-wrapped photo or name personalisation, see the separate Personalised Candles range.
How fast do you ship scented candles in Australia?
48-hour dispatch from our NSW home studio. We ask for a 1–2 week cure window on candles ordered for a specific event, so the scent throw is at full strength.
What's the best scented candle for the bedroom?
A soft floral, a clean amber, or a light fruity. Champagne & Strawberries, Santal, and Musk Sticks are the three I most often recommend. Avoid heavy gourmands like Coffee Bean and Cinnamon Donut at night.
Are your scented candles Australian-made?
Yes — every candle is hand-poured in our NSW home studio. Small batches, lead-free cotton wicks, premium soy wax, dispatched in 48 hours.
If you got this far, you're already someone who burns candles intentionally. That's our customer. Have a wander through the scented candles collection, message me first if there's a scent you wish existed and don't see, and don't forget to grab the Large if it's a gift — the engraving's free.
