Personalised pet memorial candle hand-poured in NSW with your pet's name on a vinyl sticker
Hand-poured in our NSW home studio · personalised on a vinyl sticker

A personalised pet memorial candle is a hand-poured soy candle with your pet's name, the years they were with you, and — if you want — one short line that meant something only you and they understood, all printed on a vinyl sticker that wraps the jar. I've been pouring these in our small NSW home studio since 2023, after a customer named Sarah messaged me asking if I could make one for her cavoodle, Bear. I said yes before I really knew how. I do now.

This isn't stock-photo grief. It's the candle you light on the first morning your dog isn't waiting at the back door, or the first night the bed feels too big without your cat on your feet.

If you're reading this at 11pm with a dead pet's name in your phone notes — no, it isn't weird that you want a candle.

How I actually make one (in my home studio, by hand)

I do every pour myself. Each candle gets two pours into a glass jar — the first one fills it, the second one tops up the surface once the first has set, so it ends up flat instead of sunken. That's the slow bit. Machines don't bother with the second pour.

I melt the soy gently (the exact temperature is one of my small trade secrets — every candle-maker I trust has one) and stir in the scent you've chosen. No dyes. While the wax is still molten I centre the wick, then I leave the candle alone for 48 hours to cure. That waiting is the hardest part for me — I want to send it to you that night, but it'd burn rough.

After the cure, I print your vinyl sticker — your pet's name, the dates, and your optional third line — and wrap it around the jar. The Large 285g comes with the personalised sticker included. The Medium 225g can have one too, just message me when you order.

(Small confession: the very first pet candle I ever poured, the wick drifted while it was cooling and the jar set slightly off-centre. I noticed as I was packing it. Sarah got it anyway because I couldn't bear to delay it, and I've sent her a free Christmas candle every year since because of it. Bear was a good dog.)

Each one ships in our gift-ready premium black tube box — heavy, matte, the kind of box that feels like the gift before you even open it. If you want to take it even further (a memorial gift for someone else, or for yourself on a hard day), you can upgrade at checkout to our Luxury Hermes-style gift bag — soft cord handles, structured shape, the kind you'll reuse for years.

One small ask once it arrives: let it sit for another 1 to 2 weeks before you light it. It's freshly poured for you — the longer it cures, the cleaner it burns. I know that's hard. But the candle will thank you.

Why pet-safe matters when you've still got animals at home

The cruellest bit of losing a pet is that the others in the house are grieving too. And the wrong candle can quietly make that worse. A lot of supermarket scented candles use paraffin wax and synthetic fragrance loads that release stuff small animals can't process — cats especially, because their livers can't break down certain essential oil compounds.

Every Scent Nation candle is pet-safe and non-toxic. That's not just true of the memorial range — it's true of all 198 products in our catalogue. We don't make a non-pet-safe candle. We never have. So you can light yours in the lounge room without exiling your remaining cat to the spare bedroom, and without coughing through the first ten minutes.

If you'd like the broader thinking on pet grief — and especially how the other animals in your home process losing a companion — the RSPCA's article on whether animals grieve the loss of another animal in the household is the gentlest Australian resource I've read on the subject.

What to put on the sticker — three lines that age well

Most people overthink the wording. I get it. Every word feels enormous when you're choosing it. So here's what I usually suggest, in case it helps:

  • Line 1: The name they actually answered to. Not the kennel-club name. Not the vet-clinic name. The name you yelled at 6am when they stole the toast.
  • Line 2: The years. Two dates with an em-dash between them. "2014 — 2024." You don't have to write "passed away." You really don't.
  • Line 3 (optional): One phrase, three to five words. "Best girl." "King of the couch." "Always at the door." Anything you said out loud to them more than once.
A line you'd say at the dinner table tends to be the right line. A line that sounds like it belongs on a sympathy card usually isn't.

(Real one I printed last week: "MR WHISKERS · 2009 — 2026 · loud opinions, soft heart." His owner cried when she opened it. I'd already cried when I printed it.)

What I pour, what it costs, and what arrives on your doorstep

The Pet Memorial Range

There are two candles in the pet memorial range:

  1. The Personalised Memorial Candle — $36.99 (Medium, 225g) or $46.99 (Large, 285g). The Large includes the personalised vinyl sticker for free. Fourteen scent options, from clean (Amber & Sandalwood) to citrus (Lemongrass & Persian Lime) to soft floral (Lavender). For pet memorials, most people order Lavender or Lemongrass — both light, neither overpowering. See the full range on the Memorial Candles Australia collection.
  2. The Happy Pet Prayer's Candle — $36.99, five scent options. This was the first pet candle I ever poured, back in April 2023. Three years on it's still in continuous production, which is the closest thing to a customer review I can give you.

Browse the dedicated Pet Memorial Candles collection for both. Looking for a specific dog memorial candle or a cat memorial candle? I keep a small dedicated range for each — both link out from the pet memorial collection above, and both sit inside the same brand standard. And if you're worried about your other pets — every candle in our Pet Safe Candles range is, well, the entire catalogue.

Each candle ships in our gift-ready premium black tube box with your personalised vinyl sticker already on the jar. Shipping is Australia-wide, dispatched within 48 hours from my NSW home studio. I pour by hand in small batches — that's why my weekly capacity is finite. If you need a candle for a specific date (a service, an anniversary), message me first and I'll move it to the front of the queue.

When (and how) to give one to someone else

If a friend or family member has just lost a pet, my rule is: send the candle within the first two weeks. Don't wait for the "right" moment — there isn't one. A short message in the card slot at checkout — three sentences max — lands harder than a long sympathy card. The words "I'm thinking of [pet's name]" work better than "sorry for your loss."

If you're buying for yourself, light the candle on a date that already matters — adoption day, a birthday, the morning of the first walk you took alone. The reason I make these to actually burn (rather than as ornaments) is so the moment of lighting becomes a small ritual, not a permanent reminder sitting on a shelf.

If you're not sure what scent to choose for someone else: Lavender is the safest pick. About eight in ten of the memorial stickers I print each week go on a Lavender or an Amber & Sandalwood.

FAQs

Is a pet memorial candle a good gift, or does it feel too final?

A memorial candle is one of the gentler sympathy gifts because it's something the recipient can choose to use, on their own timing. Unlike flowers, it doesn't wilt and force a tidy-up moment. Most of my customers say they light theirs once a week for the first month, then on anniversaries — the candle becomes part of the rhythm of grieving rather than the grief itself.

Can I burn a pet memorial candle around my cats and other dogs?

Yes. Every Scent Nation candle is pet-safe and non-toxic — and that's true of all 198 products in our catalogue, not just the memorial range. They're poured from soy wax, vegan, and tested in homes with cats and dogs. Burn yours in a ventilated room, on a heat-safe surface, never unattended. Cats are more sensitive than dogs; if yours leaves the room, switch to Lavender (the lightest scent throw).

How long does a personalised memorial candle take to ship in Australia?

I dispatch within 48 hours of your order. From there it ships Australia-wide with Fast Shipping from my NSW home studio. Need it for a specific date? Message me before ordering and I'll prioritise the pour.

If you've read this far and you're considering one for a pet you've already lost: write the three lines down on paper before you open the order page. Once you see your handwriting, the candle gets much easier to design. And if you change your mind tomorrow, message me — I won't be offended.
